Sy Syms Foundation Brightens Mother’s Day for 500 at NYC Rescue Mission
May 9, 2015 - 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Marcy Syms, President and founding trustee of the Sy Syms Foundation presented the NY Rescue Mission, a $100,000 check on Saturday, May 9th on behalf of the Foundation when the Mission served meals to over 500 women and children. The Foundation has been supporting this Mother’s Day event for since 2010. Not since the Great Depression have there been so many homeless women and children in New York City. For the first time in 142 years the Rescue Mission now offers an emergency women’s shelter to handle the growing number of women in homeless distress and offer them help and life changing program opportunities.
The objective of the New York City Rescue Mission (NYCRM), has remained the same since its founding in 1872: to provide spiritual hope, food, clothing and shelter to people in crisis in New York City. NYCRM overnight guests are offered nutritious meals, housing, spiritual guidance, medical/social service support and clean clothing.
Robert Syms, Marcy’s brother and co-trustee of the Foundation has been a mission supporter for over 20 years.
The Sy Syms Foundation was established in 1985 by retail entrepreneur and humanitarian Sy Syms, the late father of Marcy Syms, President and founding trustee. The foundation has been instrumental in the growth of non profit organizations that support advancement in education, scientific research and artistic expression for a better life for all. Most significant grantees are Sy Syms School of Business, PBS, WNET, WNYC, American Heart Association, NY Rescue Mission, Wiezman Institute, Boston University, Inner City Scholarship Fund and Lincoln Center Corporate Fund among others.
